Former World No. 1, Iga Swiatek has urged her young fans to take up reading as a habit. During a post-match conference after her second-round match at the China Open, Swiatek talked about the expanding influence of social media and the Internet and tried to offer a new perspective.

“I felt like people were forgetting to read because there are so many things we can do now. A lot of kids spend time on social media or YouTube all the time or just on the Internet. I just want to show them another perspective & a different way to spend their time,” she said while speaking to the press.

“I always like to go to a different world with my mind. It’s like a trip for me,” she revealed.

Swiatek has always been an ardent reader. Earlier this year, she introduced a “Read with Iga” challenge on social media, in an attempt to encourage her followers to read more. Swiatek says that reading helps her stay grounded despite the rigors of being a professional tennis player and having achieved the peak of the sport at such a young age.

The Polish defeated Varvara Gracheva in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). She will be facing her Polish counterpart Magda Linette next.

Swiatek’s love for reading has been very well documented in her off-court life. She revealed in a press conference after Cincinnati that she had to take a break from reading books because she could not stop herself.

During her North American circuit, she shared that she was reading ‘Cry of the Kalahari‘ by Delia Owens. In this year’s April, she also got her hands on the biography of American actor Mathew Perry.

A few months back she expressed how reading has helped her in hard times. “Probably when I was 17. It just made me feel less lonely in the world. It’s more like you felt like they are your friends,” she said in the WTA Insider Podcast.

Her favorite genres are biographies and autobiographies. She likes reading about influential people as it makes her feel that she knows them personally. “Just having fun in reading. Reading about people who can inspire you a little bit. And also getting more knowledge about the world, she stated in the podcast.
