Reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. She cited a ‘change of schedule‘ as the reason for her decision. The Polish, who officially relinquished her world No. 1 ranking earlier this week, had initially planned to make her post-US Open comeback at this event.
Swiatek’s unexpected elimination from the US Open in the round of 16 likely influenced her rearranged itinerary. The 21-year-old, known for her explosive and dynamic playing style, was keen to avenge her loss in New York. With a long season ahead of her, she has chosen to meticulously plan her tournament participation to ensure her physical well-being.
In a statement shared on her social media platforms, Swiatek explained her decision, saying, “I need to listen to my body, and as the season is very intense – our no. 1 priority is to play it until the end in good health and plan it wisely so we wouldn’t risk an injury.“
Swiatek’s absence in Guadalajara will be felt by fans who had been looking forward to her return to the court. Her choice to withdraw is consistent with the prudence of managing a full tennis schedule, particularly after the physically taxing Grand Slam season.
The WTA 500 event in Tokyo, begins on September 25th. It is the next stop in Swiatek’s calendar. It will be interesting to see her attempts to recapture her momentum and re-establish herself on the women’s circuit.

Iga Swiatek dethroned as world no. 1 in latest WTA rankings
The current Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Rankings, which were issued on September 11, 2023, show a significant movement at the summit of women’s tennis. Aryna Sabalenka, ascended to the coveted World No. 1 status, dethroning the previous top-ranked player, Swiatek. This news follows Sabalenka’s outstanding performance at the US Open where she reached the final.
The shift in the ranking happened after Swiatek was disqualified in the 4th round of the US Open. She lost to Jelena Ostapenko in 3 significant sets. The loss came as a surprise for tennis fans, as the Polish was looking forward to defend her US Open title this year.
Sabalenka’s ascension was aided by her surprise early withdrawal. In contrast, the Belarussian had a tremendous run, reaching the final and improving on her previous year’s achievement. Although she was defeated by the recently crowned US Open champion, Coco Gauff, Sabalenka’s consistency and determination throughout the season paid off nicely.
