World No.1 Iga Swiatek has been dominating women’s tennis since former top-ranker Ashleigh Barty took retirement. In fact, Swiatek has been sweeping past opponents much like Serena Williams used to in her days of prime.
Recently, the Pole added two more feathers to her cap by claiming her 21st bagel set (6-0 score) of the season at the San Diego Open, which is only 4 behind the all-time best of 25 stacked up by Serena in 2013.
To her credit, Swiatek’s latest bagels came against formidable players of the likes of this year’s 18-year-old French Open finalist Coco Gauff and San Diego finalist Donna Vekic. Swiatek also recently achieved another milestone of being the only women’s player since Serena in 2013 to rack up 10,000 ranking points in a single season.

Moreover, if Swiatek manages to win the WTA Finals this year and stays unbeaten in her group, she will close the season with 12,335 points, only behind Serena’s best score of 13,260 points from 2013. Ironically, if Wimbledon had allowed ranking points in 2022, Swiatek could have also possibly had 130 more.
“It’s pretty amazing. I wasn’t expecting to have this kind of season this year. I thought, maybe, I’m going to be at my peak when I’m 24, 25, and have that experience, maybe results like that are going to come,” the Polish World no.1 was recently quoted as saying.

What’s more? Swiatek is the fifth player since 2000 to win 8+ WTA-level titles in a single season (2022) after Martina Hingis (2000), Serena Williams (2002 and 2013), Kim Clijsters (2003 and 2005) and Justine Henin (2003 and 2007).
Swiatek also recently became the first female player to win 63+ matches in a single year since Angelique Kerber in 2016 (also 63).
By reaching the San Diego Open final, the Pole also became the first player to reach 9+ WTA-level finals in a single season since Serena Williams in 2013.
As things stand, Swiatek has won three Grand Slam titles already and if she continues with her current level of play and form, we can expect her to win add several more majors to her kitty in 2023.
