In a recent interview with Rzeczpospolita, Tomasz Swiatek, father of tennis prodigy Iga Swiatek, talked about his daughter’s astounding achievements and career goals. He shed light on Iga’s journey, comparing her to notable tennis legends and emphasizing her unwavering passion and commitment to the sport as her career progresses.
When asked about Iga’s career trajectory and if she is more closely connected with tennis icons like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal or perhaps following in the footsteps of Ashleigh Barty, he responded, “We see players on tour playing with verve and faith and those who seem tired. Barty reportedly already tired of the sport. This raises the question, Why do we compete so much: for the sake of playing, for money, for family, for the result?“
Tomasz also brought up the issue of motivation and why players work so hard to be at the top level. He delved into the complexity of professional sports, describing how some athletes exude vigor and faith while others appear jaded and disappointed. “We are talking about motivation, setting yourself new challenges. The most important thing is the goal – without it, life would be meaningless,” he added.
As per him, Iga is halfway through a successful career and making her dream a reality. “Iga herself once said that she would like to win every Grand Slam title. So I can say that we are halfway there,” he said proudly.

Tomasz Swiatek stands by Iga’s stance on Ukraine conflict

Tomasz addressed the questions about his daughter’s perspective on the Ukraine war and her outspoken attitude. He answered that Iga’s stance on the issue reflects her own thoughts and principles. She has used the chance to make her opinion heard by playing with a Ukrainian flag ribbon on her cap, indicating her desire for the war to end. Her strong opinions have been clear, and she has remained firm in her attitude.
Unfortunately, there were unpleasant remarks following Iga’s match with Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina, despite her outspoken advocacy for peace in Ukraine. Such remarks, according to Tomasz are hurtful. He did, however, highlight that one cannot be indifferent to a critical and delicate matter such as war.
“It’s her reflection. She plays with a ribbon on her hat, her views are clear – she wants the war to end,” he affirmed. Tomasz highlighted that the human suffering in Ukraine should be heard loud and clear, as it is an urgent issue that requires attention and awareness.
