Poland’s Iga Swiatek has left an impact on the tour not just in terms of winning titles and reaching the top of the WTA rankings, but also inspiring the younger generation of players. Moreover, Swiatek is inspiring people older than her as well. The Polish ace who recently won her sixth WTA 1000 title in China has inspired American skier Mikaela Shiffrin who seems to be in awe of Swiatek’s personality.

Shiffrin who was recently named on the 2023-24 U.S. Alpine Ski Team roster heaped praise on Swiatek for modesty and security about herself at such a young age. Shiffrin also drew a comparison between her younger self and Swiatek and claimed that she never had the level of clarity the 22-year-old possesses.

“I don’t know if she feels this way, but what I see is modesty. But also a security in herself that you don’t often see with athletes so young that also have the success. I didn’t know who the heck I was. I still kind of don’t,” said Shiffrin (via Vail Daily). “Somehow, she just seems like she has certain things that are straight in her head. The answers she has now, already in her career, I wish I had those at that time in mine.”

Mikaela Shiffrin bestows faith in Iga Swiatek to become World No.1 again

Mikaela Shiffrin who shares a special bond with Iga Swiatek also hoped to watch the Polish inn action live from the stadium one day. Shiffrin also has full faith in Swiatek about her becoming the top-ranked player in the world although it does not make much difference for the skier as she loves the unbeatable mentality.

“What I said to her is ‘whatever, that’s coming back,’” Shiffrin said regarding Swiatek losing the top ranking. “It’s the mentality that you have that’s unbeatable, so just keep going.” Notably, Swiatek who was the top-ranked player for 75 consecutive weeks was dethroned by Aryna Sabalenka. The Pole was disappointed to have lost it.

“Well, it meant a lot, obviously. It was great. On the other hand, this last part, it was pretty exhausting [to defend No. 1]. I still need to do all this stuff that my team and all these great players like Roger or Novak or Rafa are talking about: You just have to focus on the tournaments, not the rankings,” she had said. Nevertheless, Swiatek has started her quest to get the throne back.

She won the China Open and will be eyeing a title at the WTA Finals as well where Aryna Sabalenka will also be playing. The Pole can pip the Belarusian if she wins the WTA Finals in Cacun later this month.
