The Australian tennis legend, Samantha Stosur played her last professional women’s doubles today in the Australian Open 2023. Earlier this week Sam announced that this Australian Open will be her last outing as a professional tennis player. She had played in the first round of women’s doubles earlier today and unfortunately lost against the paid of Chan Hao-Ching and Yang Zhaoxuan.
She paired up with Alizé Cornet for her final major tournament and lost in straight sets 3-6,4-6. However, she is still in contention for the mixed doubles in this major tournament. The Aussie paired up with a fellow Australian Matthew Ebden and is set to play in the first round of mixed doubles on Friday. However, it is not an easy first round for this pair as they are up against the 5th-seeded pair Demi Schuurs and Nikola Mektić.
After her first-round defeat she spoke to fellow Aussie tennis great Casey Dellacqua in the post-match interview she said “I feel like I’m about to cry now that I’m looking at you cry. I thought it was a fantastic match today. I thought Alize (Cornet) and I actually played pretty well together, but [Yang and Chan] were very good today and didn’t give us anything.”
When Casey asked about her decision to retire, Sam said “I hope it’s right, that’s the main thing. It was a really hard decision. I love playing, I love competing, and I love playing in front of you guys – and a crowd like this makes it kind of feel strange you don’t want to do it anymore.”
A Grand Welcome for Samantha Stosur in her last Australian Open
Since Sam already announced her retirement after Australian Open, her fans turned up in huge numbers for her first-round women’s doubles match. She received a grand welcome into the Kia Arena as the whole stadium gave a standing ovation for the legend.
The final point also saw a similar standing ovation as the crowd rose for one last time to appreciate Sam for her contribution to Tennis Australia. She is loved by many across the globe for her invaluable contribution to the sport over the years. This Australian legend is the winner of eight Grand Slam titles overall in singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
With her latest Grand Slam title win coming in the 2021 U.S. Open women’s doubles Fans would want her to win tomorrow in the mixed doubles and end her career on a bit high. She will be missed by all and hope she makes it back in any form possible.
