World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is back to being a Tour regular after having had a difficult start to the year with the entire fiasco in Australia and subsequent ban on entering the USA as well due to his personal decision to remain unvaccinated against Covid-19.

Novak made his clay-court debut at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters where he was defeated in the very first round itself. He bounced back the next week at the 2022 Serbia Open where he finished as the runner-up having reached the finals with all wins coming in 3-sets and lost the final to Andrey Rublev.

As Novak reaches Madrid to play as the top seed in the 2022 Madrid Masters, he interacted with the press on Media Day and talked about his form coming into his second Masters event of the season and his plans going into the 2022 French Open and the 2022 Wimbledon where he is the defending champion this year.

“Well, I could have easily gone out in the first match of the tournament and had four three-setters that went, each one, over two and a half hours, so I was looking for some more competitive match play. I was looking to spend more time on the court, and that’s what I got. So of course playing finals is a good result and I have to be positive about it. I’m happy that I’m back on track in terms of being able to play in tournaments and, you know, having clarity in terms of schedule, where I need to go, where I can go, where I can peak and where I want to peak.

“Obviously, on clay, that’s Roland Garros, and then I can be also in London playing in Wimbledon, which is, of course, a very important tournament to me. I’m happy with the next few months, where I have an understanding and clarity of where I can play. So hopefully I will be able to get the best out of myself, particularly in Grand Slams,” said Novak during his press conference.

Djokovic will return to the Madrid Masters for the first time since winning the 2019 edition of the tournament, his third victory at the tournament. Novak’s first title came in 2011 when he beat Rafael Nadal in straight-sets. He later defeated Andy Murray in 3-sets in the finals of the 2016 Madrid Masters to claim his second title. Novak has a 28-9 record at the tournament. This year, he will start his campaign against the winner of the clash between wildcard entrant Carlos Gimeno Valero and French veteran Gael Monfils.
