World No. 23 Coco Gauff is into the finals of the 2022 French Open after a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Martina Trevisan in the semi-finals. It will be her maiden Grand Slam final and the 18-year old will face the in-form World No. 1 Iga Swiatek who is currently on a 34-match unbeaten streak that began in February.

Gauff reaches the finals without dropping a single set and has been quite flawless in the execution of her tactics in all the matches so far. The American, who announced her arrival by defeating Venus Williams in the first round of the 2019 Wimbledon at the age of 15, has long been in contention to achieve the biggest prize in tennis but the victories denied her time and again. It also however made sense that given her age and lack of experience, it would have been difficult but she has proven her talent this season having celebrated her 18th birthday in March.

Asked about her plan going into the finals given that she has been quite vocal about winning a major ever since she became a Tour regular, Gauff discussed that there have been a lot of changes in her since the 2019 Wimbledon Championships and she is now better prepared both physically and mentally to deal with the pressure.

“I think yes and no. I think that version was ready to win a slam, but I think she almost wanted it too much, that she put way too much pressure on herself. Now I’m definitely ready to win one but I’m not putting pressure on myself to win one. I think there’s a fine line between believing in yourself and almost pushing yourself too much. I think at that moment I was pushing myself too much to do the results, whereas when I was in the quarterfinal, like, I didn’t even like enjoying the moment.

“I didn’t even care really. Now, being in the final, I’m enjoying it. I think there is definitely a difference between ready and almost wanting it too much. I think at that moment I wanted it too much, whereas now I definitely want it. Yes, who wouldn’t? But also, it’s not going to be the end of the world if it doesn’t happen for me,” said Gauff in her post-match press conference after the win over Trevisan.
