“I’m extremely shattered” Nick Kyrgios’ US Open preparations take a hit as injury forces him out of Atlanta Open

Nick Kyrgios

World No. 47 Nick Kyrgios will have to wait to return to action in the singles events as the Australian had to withdraw from the 2022 Atlanta Open, the first event on hardcourts since April. Kyrgios had put on a brilliant performance at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships and made it to his first Grand Slam final where he finished runner-up to 3-time defending champion Novak Djokovic. While he didn’t win the trophy, he surely did gave another proof of his immense talent.

Kyrgios had taken a small break post-Wimbledon and as always had made a snarky remark on claycourt events that were scheduled after Wimbledon as the 2022 French Open is already played out. He was looking to make an early start to his preparations for the 2022 US Open that begins in nearly 1 month in New York on 29th August. However, the injury has just given a small setback to the Australian who will look to bounce back in the coming weeks.

Kyrgios along with his compatriot and winning partner from the 2022 Australian Open, Thanasi Kokkinakis, are seeded 2nd in the Doubles event at Atlanta this week and the pair is positioned 6th in the Race for this year’s ATP Finals at the end of the season. The pair took down Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round in straight sets but Kyrgios’ injury is believed to have worsened during the match.

“First of all, I want to say I’m extremely shattered that I’m not able to compete tonight. I’ve won this tournament once and I am playing probably my best tennis ever in my career. All I wanted to do was come out here and give you guys a show to see. But I’m unable to give out my best performance today and I am just extremely sorry.

“I’m going to keep my hopes up and be able to continue doubles with Thanasi this week. But I hope you all won’t be too hard on me. I wanted to come out here and see you guys face to face to tell you that I love you guys and hopefully next year, in singles, I will be able to compete and give my all,” said Nick, champion of the event in 2016, after winning his first-round doubles match announcing his withdrawal in a bitter-sweet moment.
