Serena Williams, arguably one of the greatest female athletes in the world, made a shocking announcement about her retirement and she will be playing for the very last time in the US Open 2022, where she made her presence for the first time in the year 1999 winning her first Grand Slam title. Her announcement came after she advanced into the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto defeating Nuria Parrizas.The 40-year-old was visibly struggling throughout the match but she won the match in straight sets to book her place in the next round of the tournament.
The American has won 23 singles Grand Slam titles in her career which is the most by any player in the Open Era and the second most of all time behind Margaret Court‘s tally of 24. She proved her dominance in the sport since the time she won her first Grand Slam and still claims to be a tough competitor. Williams was at the top of the WTA rankings for 186 consecutive weeks and finished the year-end as No 1 for five times.
Serena Williams along with her sister Venus Williams have won 14 doubles titles and four Olympics Gold medals. They are an undefeated pair in the Grand Slam finals. Serena had made her comeback to the court at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship as a wild-card entrant after a gap of twelve months but her run in the tournament was short-lived following a first-round exit. She won her last Grand Slam title in the year 2017 at the Australian Open.

Serena, recently in an interview with Vogue, expressed her thoughts regarding her retirement and how difficult it was for her after a long and glorious career. She even revealed the fact that her comeback at Wimbledon was not aimed at winning the title amidst all the expectations. She is looking forward to enjoying her last few matches before the US Open 2022. She spoke “Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun.“
She even revealed that she will miss being on the court, especially the younger self who was fierce and went on to win so many trophies and titles. She is super-stoked after making a tough call on her career but also grateful for the fact that she could inspire millions around the world. She added “It’s a good fantasy. But I’m not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment. I’m terrible at goodbyes. But know that I am more grateful than I can ever express in words. You have carried me to so many wins and so many trophies. I’m going to miss that version of me, that girl who played tennis. And I’m going to miss you.”
Post-retirement, she plans to utilize her maximum time with her five-year-old daughter Olympia Ohanian and discover new aspects of life.
