“I’m just going to go for it” Ons Jabeur expects a tough match as she meets Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals in Rome

Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari

Ons Jabeur, the newly crowned ATP 1000 master champion in Mutua Madrid Open, has entered another quarterfinal in Rome after she sailed past Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. She beat Putintseva 6-3, 6-2 as she has set up a mini streak of her own. Jabeur is currently on a nine-match winning streak. Jabeur has emerged more fearless and refined from Madrid, and she is another pick after Iga Swiatek to win at the Roland-Garros.

Maria Sakkari, on the other hand had not had a great few tournaments. She retired in the ’round of 16′ in the Stuttgart Open, and in the Mutua Madrid Open, she was upset by Daria Kasatkina in the ’round of 32′. Sakkari played well in Rome as she gears up for the French Open 2022. Sakkari faced Coco Gauff, who ousted her in the previous edition of the Italian Open, and this time Sakkari took her revenge as she sent the talented youngster packing. Both of the players will meet in the quarterfinals for a tough battle. Jabeur and Sakkari have both one each of their previous two matches, with Sakkari winning the most recent clash in Ostrava in 2020.

Ons Jabeur is thrilled by her quarterfinals appearance in Rome. According to WTA, she said about Putintseva that : “Honestly, I feel good that it didn’t go over two or three hours, because I know she can have long matches,” “Pretty happy that I kept it simple.”

About Sakkari, she said:

“a great player, a great friend on tour. … It’s gonna be a tough match. I know she plays really good: big serve, big forehand and really great backhand.

“Our last match was very close, I had my opportunities. I think I’m just going to go for it.”

It would be a real battle with both the players looking to do well here to gain more confidence for the French Open. While Jabeur would still be confident with her win in Madrid, Sakkari would like to earn some of that by beating Jabeur in the quarterfinals.
