The American professional tennis player Sofia Kenin has a career-high WTA ranking of No. 4 in the world. She was the 2020 WTA Player of the Year, an award she received after winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing as a runner-up at the 2020 French Open. Kenin has won five WTA singles titles and won two WTA doubles titles, including the 2019 China Open at the Premier Mandatory level with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

The Atlanta Open exhibition match marked Kenin’s first appearance on the court since the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, where she lost in the first round. Since then, Kenin has been struggling with an ankle injury that has resisted her from competitions during the last few months. On Monday night, Kenin received a warm welcome from the Atlanta Open crowd in her return to the court.

She played the exhibition match against Coco Gauff, the match, however, didn’t go as Sofia would’ve planned as lost to Gauff in straight two sets 6-1, 6-2. The two-time Australian Open winner was still “grateful” that she finally played some tennis after her setback in April, due to which she dropped to 419th spot in the world rankings which is a long way away from her peak ranking of no. 4 just only two years ago.

Kenin after the match, speaking to the exhibition said, “Grateful. I’m just thankful for a lot of things… I was in a cast (in April) and now I’m playing here. I’m just thankful.”

Sofia played her last singles match at the Indian Wells Masters against Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in which she was defeated by the Brazilian in straight two sets by 6-3, 7-5. She also competed in the doubles category of the tournament with her compatriot Alison Riske-Amritraj where the pair could advance their run till the round of 16s only, having lost against the Japanese and American pair of Asia Muhammad and Ena Shibahara.
