Rafael Nadal clinched his 22nd major when he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals of the 2022 French Open to win his 14th title at the Roland Garros. Nadal won the match 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in 2 hours and 18 minutes to lift the title yet again in his 18th appearance to take his record in Paris to 112-3 over the past 18 seasons since he made his tournament debut.

The win in Paris gives him a 2-title cushion against arch-rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer who are tied on 20 majors each. While Federer has been absent for the past three majors having last played at the 2021 Wimbledon, Djokovic lost in the 2021 US Open finals and suffered a 4-set defeat in the quarter-finals of the French Open this year at the hands of Nadal.

Nadal took the lead in the race for most majors for the first time at the 2022 Australian Open and has now extended it further. With the next Slam being the 2022 Wimbledon, everyone was curious whether the Spaniard will turn up for the grasscourt major where he last played in 2019 and lost in the semis to Federer who then lost the finals to Djokovic. With the 2020 Wimbledon cancelled due to the Pandemic, Nadal missed last year’s Wimbledon due to the injury he picked up during his defeat in the semis of the 2021 French Open.

With the 2022 Wimbledon stripped of the ranking points due to their ban on Russian and Belarusian players, many players are looking to skip the Grand Slam and take a rest instead to remain fit for the remainder of the season. While players did address this during their French Open conferences as well, Nadal remained silent on his participation status but has now spoken about it finally on whether he makes the trip to London this year.

“I will be in Wimbledon if my body is ready to play Wimbledon. Wimbledon is a tournament I want to miss, I love it. Players like me are always ready to play Wimbledon. Let’s see how it works. Wimbledon is a priority, but as I said I’m not ready to take more injections to play it,” said Nadal during the champions’ press conference at the French Open.
