“I’m not sure she has the most accomplished career” Legend Chris Evert comments on Serena Williams’ tennis era
Serena Williams with her 6th US Open title tying her with Chris Evert for maximum titles at the US Open
Serena Williams is gearing up for the US Open where the stakes are immensely high for her this time. She’s looking to win a record 7th title at her home grand slam. Currently, Chris Evert and Williams are tied for the most women’s singles titles won at the US Open with six each. This slam is particularly crucial for Serena Williams as only this month she announced her retirement from tennis which will happen after the conclusion of the US Open.
Serena William has defined women’s tennis over the years with her sheer dominance which lasted over two decades. In her Vogue interview, Williams said that she has never liked the word retirement. But she views this announcement as an ‘evolution’. With 23 grand slams to her name (only one behind Margaret Court), Williams will certainly have the crowd cheering for her seeing that every match could be her last match.

In her era she is the greatest of all time: Chris Evert looks back on Serena Williams’ career and her chances at the 2022 US Open
In a recent interview with The Guardian, 18-time grand slam champion, Chris Evert opened up about her struggles with cancer and developments in women’s tennis. She thoroughly discussed Serena Williams‘ professional career. She said, “She’s 40-years old. She’s lost to players she would normally beat and she hasn’t trained because of injuries. She also has so many wonderful things in her life and so, instead of getting frustrated and sinking down the rankings, this is a perfect time for her to go out.”
When asked if Williams is the greatest player of all time, Evert further said, “It’s such a tough question. In her era, she is the greatest of all time. Then there’s the most accomplished career – how many tournaments you won and how consistent you were and I always include Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova alongside Serena because in my era they were the greatest of all time.”
“Now, there’s a different philosophy. It’s all about the grand slams. Is Serena the best tennis player until this point? Absolutely. But it’s complicated when you compare careers and wins and eras. I’m not sure she has the most accomplished career,” Evert added.
Finally, Chris Evert commented on Williams’ chances of winning the US Open, “It’s a long shot. But if I were to pick 10 women who had a chance, she would be there.”
Serena Williams will start her US Open campaign on Tuesday, August 30 with her first-round match against Danka Kovinic.
