“I’m the best on grass”: Nick Kyrgios makes outrageous claims ahead of Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios

World No. 78 Nick Kyrgios is currently on a small break from tennis and enjoying life at home having been busy in the initial months of the season. Kyrgios accompanied by his partner Costeen Hatzi had a good run of results after his doubles title at the 2022 Australian Open and despite not clinching a trophy, he ensured he is back in Top-100.

Nick was supposed to skip the entire Clay court season and be prepared for the Grasscourt season but he made a surprise appearance at the 2022 Houston Claycourt Championships reaching the semi-finals, his best singles result so far this season. As Nick prepares to return to action at the end of Golden Swing, he had some bold claims to make of his chances at the upcoming 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

“I mean, on the grass, I’d say me. Something about this year has just been different. I’ve played five or six events and I’ve gone pretty well in pretty much everyone I’ve played and I’ve beaten a lot of the top players in the world this year. I guess it’s more of a resurgence year, just going out there and showing people that I don’t have to go out there and play all the time, [that] I can still be at the top of the game. I’m just enjoying it and doing it my way. I play for a lot of people. I feel like I’m very relatable.

“A lot of kids and people look up to me when I play. If someone like me can make it this far and achieve what I’ve achieved, I think it gives them a lot of hope. Obviously, I’m 27 now, so I’ve got to provide a bit of money, but it’s just a lot of fun; the tennis tour, travelling around the world, it’s a pretty nice lifestyle. I want to soak it up while I can,” said Kyrgios speaking with Sydney Morning Herald having moved from Canberra to Sydney to stay with Costeen.

Wimbledon record of Nick Kyrgios

Nick had a fantastic debut at the Wimbledon reaching the quarter-finals as a 19-year old back in 2014 having defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. He then made consecutive fourth-round runs in the next two years before being forced to retire in his first-round match in 2017. He reached the third round in 2018 and was defeated by Rafa in the second round in 2019 avenging his 2014 defeat.

Kyrgios looked in great form in 2021 but an untimely injury in his third-round match against Felix Auger-Aliassime saw him retire mid-match once again to have a 15-7 record at the Championships. Over his career so far, Nick has a 33-19 record on Grass which somehow tones down his bold claim of being the best on the surface.
