In a bizarre incident, Wimbledon forces a Romanian player to change her bra after entering the court

Wimbledon takes its traditions and dress codes very seriously. One of the main traditions of the tournament is wearing white overalls including sneakers and undergarments. If a player’s undergarment is visible and it’s not white it may cause some problems for the players so they urge the players to strictly adhere to the rules. Also, the dresses should be white, not off-white or cream.

There was such an incident at Wimbledon 2022 when the Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzarnescu was asked to change her bra as it was visible to be black during the warmup before the beginning of her first-round match against Nastasja Schunk. Buzarnescu did what was asked of her and came up with the appropriate change and was able to win her match 6-4, 6-2.

“The white one I had was too transparent” Mihaela Buzarnescu explains her dilemma at Wimbledon

This incident, fortunately, did not cause any trouble for Mihaela who talked about the incident to Eurosport after the match. She explained: “My bustier was too black and could be seen up here (pointing to the bust area) and I had to change it. The white one I had was too transparent and you could see everything underneath and I couldn’t wear it, so I borrowed from my coach, I took her bustier (laughs). That’s good, we did it.”

It was a slight aberration and not something serious but it goes to show that following the dress code at Wimbledon is of paramount importance. Though Buzarnescu’s journey only lasted till the second round when she lost to Coco Gauff in straight sets, she played that match on center court, so it should still be a great feeling to play there.
