In a surprising move, Andy Murray accepts the wildcard for the Madrid Masters

Andy Murray has reversed his position and announced that he will compete in clay-court events next month in preparation for Wimbledon. Before the start of his home Grand Slam on June 27, the former world No. 1 had opted to forego the entire clay-court season and head directly to grass-court competitions.

However, after reconciling with old coach Ivan Lendl in Florida and spending the previous month working together, the Scot has accepted a wildcard to compete in the Madrid Masters, which begins on May 1. Before returning to the UK for the grass-court season, he might seek further competitive action in the Rome Masters as well.

Murray hasn’t won consecutive matches since reaching the final in Sydney at the beginning of January. After a humiliating second-round loss to world No 120 Taro Daniel at the Australian Open, he revealed he will reconnect with Lendl, with whom he won three Grand Slam championships and rose to world No 1, in March.

The decision to play competitive matches on clay has demonstrated the influence of the eight-time Grand Slam winner. In a short-term arrangement that will continue through the summer, the two are collaborating for the third time.

However, after seeing Murray play in Miami, Lendl felt that the Scot could challenge for the top championships even with a metal hip. The decision to play in the 2022 French Open has been made and the Murray will not make the trip as the Brit fancies his chances for a title on Grass more than on Clay and participating in the Grand Slam could shorten his preparation for the Grass season.

Murray, who will be 35 years old next month, has been practising on clay in the United States and is happy with his improvement. He may instead compete in a Challenger tournament in Surbiton during the second week of Roland Garros before competing in the Weissenhof 250 event on grass in Stuttgart beginning June 6.
