In the quarter-finals of the 2024 Indian Wells Open, World No. 4 and 4th-seeded Daniil Medvedev will take on World No. 7 and 7th-seeded Holger Rune. Medvedev is a former runner-up at the event having reached the finals last year. Rune will be playing in his first quarter-finals at Indian Wells.

As the tournament has planned to play all the singles quarter-finals on the same day, Medvedev and Rune will play the final match of the day at Stadium 1. The match is scheduled to start only after 6:00 PM local time and not before that.

Daniil Medvedev vs Holger Rune: Match Preview

Medvedev continues his fine form in the Californian desert as he reaches the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year. The Russian defeated Bulgarian hero Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 to make his way to the last-8.

The former US Open champ had earlier defeated Sebastian Korda 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the third round. His campaign started against Roberto Carballes Baena, whom he defeated 6-2, 6-3. This is the seventh tournament appearance for Medvedev, and he is in the quarterfinals just for the second time. 

Rune had to stage an epic comeback in the fourth round to reach the last eight. Up against 2022 champ and local Californian Taylor Fritz, the Dane had to save a match point in the second set’s tiebreaker. He eventually won the match 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-3. 

With a bye in the first round and a walkover in the second, Rune played on the court directly in the third round. He defeated Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to set up the meeting with Fritz. The win over the American takes the 20-year-old to his maiden quarterfinals at Indian Wells. 

The head-to-head is currently tied at 1-1 between the two players. Both of those matches came on clay courts. Rune won their quarter-final tie at the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters while Medvedev won the finals at the 2023 Rome Masters.

Coming into the tie, Medvedev is 12-2 for the season with a career hardcourt record of 231-72. His overall career record across all surfaces stands at 502-200. Rune is 13-5 in 2024 with a hardcourt record of 40-33 across his career. His overall career record is currently at 219-111.

Both players have made good runs so far this season but are yet to win their maiden title of the year. With the semi-final spot on the line, a big performance can be expected from both men. In either case, it should be a close encounter given the potential the two have.
