In the quarter-finals of the 2024 Indian Wells Open, World No. 9 and 9th-seeded Maria Sakkari will take on World No. 23 and 23rd-seeded Emma Navvaro. Sakkari is a former runner-up at the event. As for Navarro, it will be her first quarter-final appearance at Indian Wells.

Maria Sakkari vs Emma Navarro: Match Preview

After a tough start to the season, Sakkari seems to have found her groove. Seeded ninth, the Greek had a bye in the first round. She started her campaign against Diana Shnaider winning the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.

She had a comparatively easy win against Caroline Garcia as she beat the Frenchwoman 6-3, 6-4. In the fourth round, she took on another French player, this time, Diane Parry. In a closely fought match, Sakkari emerged victorious with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win.

She now reaches the quarter-finals for the third consecutive year at Indian Wells. She was the runner-up in 2022 against Iga Swiatek. In 2023, she was defeated by eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka in the semis.

One of the revelations of the event, Navarro has made an impressive run so far. Seeded 23rd, she took on Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the second round. She had a close shave as she won the match 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. In the third round, she took on Ukrainian icon Elina Svitolina and survived another three-set battle.

She won the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Her biggest test awaited her in the fourth round as she took on World No. 2 Sabalenka. With the Belarusian favorite for the match, Navarro kept her calm and played to her game plan perfectly. She clinched a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win against the reigning Australian Open winner.

This is just the third appearance for Navarro in tennis paradise. Her second-round exit last year was her best result having lost in her debut match back in 2022.

This will be the third meeting between the two players with the head-to-head at 1-1. They first met in the quarter-finals of the 2023 San Diego Open where Navarro playing as a qualifier won in three sets. Sakkari then beat her in last month’s Dubai Championships with a straight-set win in the second round.

While Navarro has been the player in better form, Sakkari has the experience on her side. But with the monumental win over Sabalenka, the young American will be counting on her chances to reach the semis.
