The 47th edition of the Indian Wells Open is nearing its end with the fifth round i.e. the quarterfinals starting on Thursday. To everyone’s surprise, five-time champion Novak Djokovic failed to make it to the last eight as lucky loser Luca Nardi defeated the Serbian ace in the third round. Nevertheless, American ATP star Tommy Paul made it to the quarterfinal as he beat Nardi in the fourth round.

The American will meet Norwegian Casper Ruud in the fifth round. Ruud beat Frenchman Gael Monfils in the fourth round. This will be the fifth meeting between the two players.

American tennis star Tommy Paul has fared decently at the 2024 Indian Wells Open. The World No. 12 won his first three matches emphatically as Paul beat Alexis Michelsen, Ugo Humbert, and Luca Nardi. The American has not yet dropped a set and will now face Ruud in the fifth round.

Speaking of Ruud, the Norwegian has been in good form at the Masters tournament. Ruud faced Lukas Klein in his first match at the tournament and beat the Slovakian in straight sets, he had to play a tiebreaker in the second set. In the third round, Ruud took down Arthur Fils in straight sets of 6-2, 6-4.

In the fourth round, the Norwegian met another Frenchman Gael Monfils. It did not start well for Ruud as he lost the first set 3-6. But the 25-year-old made a comeback in the second set and won it in tiebreaker. Now, he will meet an upbeat Paul in the quarterfinal.

Both Paul and Ruud have been in good form. Although the American has not dropped a set yet, he will have his abysmal record against the Norwegian in his mind. Paul has managed to win only one match out of the five matches played between the two players.

It is also worth mentioning that the solitary win for Paul came way back in 2017. Ruud has won the next four encounters. However, Paul has pushed the Norwegian to his limits. At the 2023 US Open, the two players indulged in a tiring match as they played a five-setter including three tiebreakers.

Now, as the two players are set to face each other in the Indian Wells Open quarterfinal, it is to be seen how far the two players push each other.
