Injury forces Iga Swiatek to withdraw from the 2022 Madrid Open
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has been forced to skip the 2022 Madrid Open due to an injury. This will be Iga’s second withdrawal of the season having earlier skipped the 2022 Charleston Open to take some rest. This time, however, the reason is different and it will be worrisome going ahead.
Iga has cited an injury in her right shoulder that has forced her to miss the fourth WTA-1000 event of the season which she was looking to win having won the first three already, the Qatar Open and then the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami. The extent of the injury has not been yet revealed but it looks like a precautionary withdrawal so as to not dampen her chances for the other events of the season.
Iga will be the defending champion at the 2022 Italian Open in Rome having won it with a double bagel over Karolina Pliskova in the finals wrapping the match in mere 46 minutes to claim the title. Following the tournament in Rome will be the all-important 2022 French Open where Iga would like to have her second Grand Slam having earlier emerged as the champion in Roland Garros in 2020.
“After intense last weeks and winning 4 titles in a row it’s time to take care of my arm that has been fatigued since the Miami Open and I haven’t had a chance to handle it properly. I need a break from playing so intensively in order to treat my arm well and that’s why, unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open. My body needs rest. I’m going to take some time to prepare for Rome and Paris. See you soon there. Hopefully, I will play in Madrid many times in the future – looking forward to it,” tweeted Iga.
Iga Swiatek’s ranking will hardly be affected
With the Madrid Open scheduled between 28th April to 7th May and the Italian Open starting from 9th May with the finals on 15th May, Iga’s decision looks like a wise one as she would not be dropping many points given she had reached just the third round in her tournament debut last year. Iga had lost to the eventual runner-up and then World No. 1 Ash Barty.
Iga has a strong lead of 2036 points over World No. 2 Paula Badosa. As per the Tour structure, Iga is likely to drop 120 points which will take her tally to 7021 points still holding a massive lead at the top of the rankings. Badosa is currently second with 5045 points.
