“It doesn’t matter how well I play,” Matteo Berrettini expresses his disappointment and makes huge claims about Wimbledon ranking point row
Matteo Berrettini
Matteo Berrettini was ruled out of the clay season after suffering from an injury. He last played the Indian Wells Masters and returned on the grass at Stuttgart to win the title. He defeated 2-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the final in three sets 6-4,5-7,6-3 to win his maiden title of the season.
Going into Wimbledon, Berrettini is the defending finalist but won’t be able to defend his 1200 points due to ATP’s ruling of scraping ranking points at the tournament. ATP decided to remove ranking points at this year’s Championships as a stand against Wimbledon banning Russian athletes. But the ATP didn’t freeze last year’s points which means that all points won last year will be lost after Wimbledon 2022.
The Italian spoke about Wimbledon’s situation and said that players won’t miss the tournament because it is a major and adding to that, it will have record prize money this year. He also said that Wimbledon- being one of the most prestigious tournaments has a different feel and hence players won’t miss it despite no ranking points awarded.
“It’s a Slam, if I read it right it’s going to be a record for prize money this year as well so everybody is going to play obviously and just also because it’s Wimbledon because it’s one of the most important tournaments that we have and I don’t see anybody saying, ‘okay we’re not going because there are no points,’” he said.
‘Nobody asked us our opinion about it and I think it shouldn’t work like that’: Matteo Berrettini
Berrettini further revealed that nobody asked the players what they think about the Ranking points being scraped and that this isn’t fair. He added that this thing will always be in the back of his mind playing at the AELTC and even if he plays well, it doesn’t matter because he’s going to drop out of the top 20 anyways.
“Nobody asked us our opinion about it and I think it shouldn’t work like that. It’s difficult to play with these thoughts in my mind because I know that it doesn’t matter how well I play, I’m going to drop out of maybe the top 20,” he said.
