“It feels strange to not play Wimbledon” Roger Federer talks about his comeback after missing this year’s Championships

Roger Federer

Roger Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. Ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks, and has finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. He has won 103 ATP singles titles, the second-most of all time after Jimmy Connors, including 20 Grand Slam titles, and a record eight men’s singles Wimbledon titles.

The Swiss international couldn’t compete in this year’s Wimbledon following his knee injury and has been out of action since Wimbledon last year after having his third knee surgery in 18 months. Federer had made it to the quarter-finals last year in the hopes of winning his 21st major and 9th Wimbledon title but he lost in straight-sets and having injured his knee, he has been out of action since then and is doubtful for the 2022 US Open as well.

Roger Federer speaks about his comeback

However, he came to this year’s Wimbledon where he was one of the invited dignitaries of Wimbledon champions at the ‘Parade of Champions‘. Federer also spoke about his desire to play in the Wimbledon one more time when he returns to action later this year and has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

Speaking of his comeback and missing this year’s Wimbledon, Federer said, “It feels very strange to me not to play Wimbledon this year and to watch it on TV. I’ve been there every time since 1998. Time will tell how I want to deal with this, and how often I keep looking for interest. I think about that now sometimes, but not often. My main focus is on how to make my comeback in tennis. I work hard on that and I think about it every day.

“It is a time of more rest. I’ve been on the road for so long that it was also nice to experience a little more calm and to be in one place more often, which already happened due to the coronavirus. It gave me the opportunity to be selective in figuring out my travels, to give something back. Many friends always came to see me now,” added Roger in his interview with Het Parool.
