Andrey Rublev is ranked eighth in the ATP rankings. The best result for a Russian was the fifth line of the rating in September 2021. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Andrey Rublev became the champion in the mixed doubles together with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Rublev won the ATP tournament in Belgrade on April 24, adding to his list of accomplishments. He defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in the final. With scores of 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), and 6-0, the match ended in three sets. This was his 11th triumph in ATP competitions. In order to do so, he had to skip the Barcelona Open, which ran from April 16 to April 24. However, following his victory, the Russian went into greater detail about why he was not on the candidate list for the Barcelona Open.

Andrey Rublev, the Russian tennis player who won the Serbian Open over Novak Djokovic, explained why he refused to compete in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) competition in Barcelona. He said, “The tournament in Barcelona is really almost home for me because I am a member of the club where it takes place. But there were reasons for this decision. Last year, the organizers of the tournament in Barcelona did not behave very nicely towards several players, including me. I do not want to reveal the details, but these were really significant nuances, and it is not surprising that some well-known names were missing from the list of participants in the Barcelona tournament. As a result, I accepted the invitation to play at the Serbia Open and did not lose. In Belgrade, I was treated ten times better than I could have expected.”

“When I started asking questions, I was told that everything would change this year. But it got worse. You need to know your worth, you can’t allow yourself to be treated like that,” said Rublev.

Last week, the Russian played in Belgrade open instead of Barcelona, where he trains in his spare time. These tournaments are hosted by the family of the world’s No.1 tennis player, Serbian Novak Djokovic. “I knew that the Djokovic family, on the contrary, appreciates me. He will help me to come to the tournament in excellent shape, and provide everything I need. So the choice was obvious,” added the Russian tennis ace.

Rublev won his third title of the season just days after denouncing Wimbledon’s “complete discrimination” against Russian and Belarusian players. Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Wimbledon has barred all Russian and Belarusian players from competing in this summer’s Grand Slam competition. The ATP and WTA, as well as a number of players, including world number one Novak Djokovic, slammed the decision, calling it “crazy”. Nevertheless, Rublev now has the same number of tour-level championships as Spaniard Rafael Nadal in 2022, having won tournaments in Marseille and Dubai in February.
