Stefanos Tsitsipas is the last man standing at Monte Carlo for a second straight year as he blasts past Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Final of the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters in straight sets 6-3,7-6(3) to win a second Masters 1000 title. The Greek becomes only the second active player after Rafael Nadal to win back-to-back titles at the Principality.

This is his 2nd Masters title in the 4 Finals that he has played and boasts a 100% record on Masters 1000 level on the red dirt. He was the best clay-court player last season and given his start this season, it is very likely that he could repeat the same feat again. He was dominant right from the very start in the final and didn’t look under any sort of pressure.

He played his part to perfection from the baseline and made Fokina move all over the court. He held serve and managed to take a decisive break to wrap up the set. He won the set 6-3 and carried all the momentum into the second set. But the Spaniard was a much better player in the second set. He tried to go deep on serve and engage in longer rallies. The match went into the tie-breaker but Tsitsipas managed to hold his nerve to win the tie-breaker and eventually the set.

Tsitsipas was visibly excited in the on-court interview and revealed how proud he is of his performance. He talked about how he held his head high despite being on back foot at times.

“I am very proud of myself,” Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview. “Things weren’t going well at one point, but I managed to stay composed to finish the match off. I am really proud with the belief I put in my game. I kept believing. Sometimes you doubt yourself, but it is always important to keep your head high.”

When asked about his French Open chances, he said that their are a couple of Masters tournaments still left before the French Open and hence he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself.

“I haven’t been thinking about Roland-Garros yet, we have many Masters 1000 until then, so I might as well just as well concentrate on the other tournaments before the French Open comes along,” he said.
