“It is impossible,” Deputy Director of Davis Cup rules out defending champion Russia’s participation this year

The ban on Russian and Belarusian players has heavily affected many players around the world, the most affected tournament was this year’s Wimbledon, where no Russian or Belarusian player was allowed to participate in the tournament which caused many players to miss out on a chance of winning a major title.

Players like Daniil Medvedev who is currently ranked world number 1 was not able to participate in the tournament and the same seems to be the case for the 2022 edition of the Davis Cup, 2021 champions Team Russia won’t be able to defend their crown this time around as they beat Croatia in the finals last year.

“The one that will not be there is Russia,” Francisco Clavet talks about Team Russia not participating in the Davis Cup

Team Russia

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many players from Russia and Belarus were not allowed to participate in the 2022 Wimbledon and they won’t be allowed to compete at the Davis Cup this year as well according to the assistant director of the event Francisco Clavet. Talking with Marca he talked about the format of the event this year and the possible match-ups.

Talking about the Russian players competing, he said, “They have great players who, logically, do not support what their country is experiencing at the moment, but it is impossible. We would love to have number 1 Medvedev, Rublev, Khachanov, or Karatsev, but he will not be able to be like the Russian Tennis Federation or in any other way if his situation does not change.”

The group stages of the tournament will be held across four venues in Bologna, Hamburg, Valencia, and Glasgow with the knockout stages scheduled to be conducted in Malaga, Spain. The knockout stages commence on the 22nd of November and will end on the 27th of November.

It would be easier for the rest of the teams without Team Russia competing this time around as the defending champions have a plethora of great players in Daniil Medvedev, Rublev, and many others.
