“It is in America’s interest” Novak Djokovic’s case for the US Open gets sent to US President Joe Biden as the Serbian-American alliance sends a lawyer-backed letter

Novak Djokovic and Joe Biden

3-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic is currently waiting for confirmation if he will be allowed for the 2022 US Open which starts in nearly a month’s time. The 21-time Grand Slam winning Serbian has refused to take the Covid-19 vaccine which makes him ineligible to enter the USA as the country requires foreigners to present proof of vaccination.

While American players and spectators can be present for the US Open irrespective of their vaccination status, the same is not applicable to foreigners, a policy that has sparked continuous criticism of the government with American president Joe Biden being forced to grant an exemption for Novak if the policy cannot be revoked and the borders be opened completely for all foreigners.

With Djokovic requiring support to pressurise the American government, the Serbian-American Voting Alliance (SAVA), a “non-partisan Political Action Committee” which looks after the welfare of Serbians in the USA and supports candidates who can be helpful for the Serbian-Americans, has sent a letter to the Biden government with help of lawyers making a plea to allow Djokovic to play at the Grand Slam in New York next month.

“The US Open is the biggest tennis tournament in the world, and it won’t be what it is without Novak Djokovic. Considering the economic situation and the crisis at all levels, America must not allow the US Open not to take place in its full glory and capacity, which means the arrival of Novak Djokovic, who has been crowned three times at the US Open. Novak does not pose any security threat, is one of the healthiest people in the world due to his disciplined life and serves as a role model and inspiration to millions around the world.

“It is in America’s interest that the biggest tournament in the world hosts the best player in the world, especially since he just won the seventh Wimbledon in London,” reads the letter drafted by Borko Komnenović, a member of SAVA, which also states article 3(b) “national interest” of the presidential proclamation, which grants entry to some foreign nationals to be exempt from existing Covid restrictions if it is deemed in the national interest.
