The 18-year-old Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the Barcelona Open 2022. The Spanish teen star celebrated traditionally like his idol Rafael Nadal after winning the title. On his way to victory, Carlos defeated Kwon Soon-woo and Jaume Munar in his first two matches. He won them quite easily.

He then won against the Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas, last year’s runner-up and went on to win the match by 2 sets to one and claiming his spot in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, he faced Alex de Minaur the Australian and came back from a set and multiple match points down to win the match. In the finals, he faced compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta and won the match in straight-sets.

However, in the semi-finals, there was a point when Tsitsipas nearly hit Alcaraz with the ball and that did not seem correct to Alex Corretja the ATP Tour World Championship winner. In the situation, Stefanos was down 5-4 and also 40-love down.

Carlos seemed to win the set, Tsitsipas tried to pick up the volley on the forehand side and while Alcaraz was near the net Stefano hit the ball strongly in the middle of the court which Alcaraz had to duck and stared at Stefanos while going back to his chair. The Barcelona crowd didn’t seem happy as they supported the local boy Alcaraz.

Corretja tried to break down the situation there and gave his opinion on what actually would have happened. “I was very surprised to see Alcaraz dictating so much against Tsitsipas. Someone who just won Monte Carlo and is usually very aggressive, but he struggled so much on the backhand side, and from Stefanos’ point of view you can see he was desperate, that’s why on that ball he ran and he was just trying to hit as hard as he could to probably just to tell the guy ‘OK, leave me alone, you’re pushing me so much.

“And it was, I think, sort of like a desperate reaction from Stefanos. And I also liked a lot the way Alcaraz behaved at that moment because he looked at him like ‘OK, no fear, I’m not scared of you, I’m beating you and that’s what I’m doing with my tactics’. He mixed it up very well. He showed a lot of personality and at the same time, he was brave and ready to fight,” added Corretja further as reported by tennisuptodate.
