Thiem beat Juan Pablo Varillas yesterday in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open by 6-4, 6-3 to progress into the semi-finals of the tournament. The Austrian talked about the hardships that he had to overcome while being injured for almost a year, he didn’t use his protected rankings and didn’t make the entry list of the US Open, he is speculated to get a wild card entry into the tournament.
Thiem also talked about his coach’s situation while he was injured, he said, “We had unbelievable success together and then we also came through a very tough time now. But I think that it makes a good relationship to get through those tough times and for him, it wasn’t easy because he wasn’t there a lot. Obviously, he was at home in Chile, not knowing how is my wrist and my progress, not able to do anything. He only started again when I was able to hit. So, I guess it was a tough time for him and I’m also super happy for him that good results are coming back.”
