After recovering from an injury that kept him from playing for 10 months, Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem, 28, has finally begun to regain his form. After going 14 months without a victory, Thiem finally got one against Emil Ruusuvuori in the Swedish Open. After defeating Ruusuvuori and Roberto Bautista Agut, he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Sebastian Baez.
With victories against Hugo Gaston in the round of 32, Federico Delbonis in the round of 16, and Juan Pablo Varillas yesterday, Thiem has continued his strong play at the Swiss Open. He fell to top seed Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals, his first ATP-level semi-final appearance of the season.
“I had never experienced such a situation” Dominic Thiem opens up on his misfiring practice sessions at Roland Garros
Dominic Thiem returned during a pretty thrilling time, holding his news conference at his house in Kizbühel. The Austrian player did attempt to return too soon. He was therefore putting in a lot of effort, and when in Paris for Roland-Garros, he made the most of the chance to set up sessions with elite players. Unfortunately, the outcome was very different from what he had anticipated. Even worse, he felt a bit embarrassed.
“In Paris, I was able to hit the ball with tenors of the circuit but in the end it was quite annoying, because often I couldn’t keep up. I was doing far too many wanderers and especially my ball did not advance in forehand. I had never experienced such a situation,” said the 29-year-old.
Thiem signed off by saying, “Fortunately, it’s a thing of the past. And I must admit that the sessions carried out last with Andrey Rublev helped me this time to regain my rhythm.”
