“It will take months” Stan Wawrinka gets a reality check after a first-round defeat at the 2022 French Open

Stan Wawrinka

3-time Grand Slam champion and a French Open champion in 2015, Stan Wawrinka did not have a happy return to the Stade Roland Garros as he lost in 4-sets to local lad Corentin Moutet. Moutet won the match 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 in 2 hours and 51 minutes to knock the former World No. 3 out of the 2022 French Open.

Wawrinka made a good start by clinching the first set and came very close in the third set as well but it was Moutet’s day as he took charge of the match from the second set and did not allow Wawrinka any window to come back in the match. Despite Stan having 12 aces to Moutet’s 1 and making 4 double faults to Moutet’s 5, the difference came out to be in the unforced errors with the Frenchman making 32 errors while Stan breached the 50-error point in his 51 unforced errors for the match.

This was Stan’s fourth loss in the first round of the French Open and his first since he suffered a similar fate in 2018. The Swiss has however not lost confidence and rather showed signs of positive in his post-match comments where he revealed the positives he will be taking home from the defeat.

“I know what I want, I know and I’m convinced that I can renew with a very good level because I have many clues that show that I can do it. But it will take months. But I’m not afraid, it’s not a problem for me to train hard,” said Wawrinka in comments reported by journalist Chris Oddo.
