Novak Djokovic seems to have finally found his lost form. He started his season in Dubai with a quarterfinal outing after he was not allowed to play the Australian summer leg due to his vaccination status. Due to the same reason, he was forced to skip the Golden Swing too. He returned to tout at Monte Carlo where he lost his first match. He then bounced back at Belgrade with a runner-up finish in the Serbian Open. At the Madrid Masters, he lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
This week in Rome, he is yet to drop a set and won the first two matches comfortably against Aslan Karatsev and Stan Wawrinka. In the quarterfinal, he survived a tough test from Canadian 8th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and won the match in straight sets 7-5,7-6(1).
Casper Ruud has had a mixed season so far. He started his season with a title triumph at the Argentina Open after he was ruled out of the Australian Open due to injury. He then lost in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters before bouncing back to reach the final of the Miami Open. Despite his highs, Ruud didn’t start on clay well, his favorite surface. He lost in the Round of 16 at Monte Carlo before reaching the last 8 at Barcelona. After yet another quarterfinal outing at Munich, he lost his opening match Madrid.
However, he has turned things around this week in Rome. He defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round and followed it up with a Round of 16 victory over Jenson Brooksby. He then eased past Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinal in straights sets 7-6(7),7-5 to book a date with Djokovic.

Djokovic will be the obvious favorite to win the match. The Serb has got enough match practice under his belt and is playing some high-quality tennis. He is once again taking charge from the baseline and is looking very solid on serve too. Ruud will have to defend for his life if he wants to get anywhere close to breaking Djokovic’s serve. Expect a tight match with Djokovic reaching his second final of the season.
