Casper Ruud made sure the whole world looked at him last year when he had an amazing run at the 2022 Roland Garros final. He eventually lost it to Rafael Nadal. However, he impressed many by making it to that stage. The tennis audience expected big things from the Norwegian in 2023. However, apart from a title at the Estoril Open, it’s been a below-average season for him. This Italian Open has presented him with the opportunity to get one more title under his belt, as he has made it to the semi-finals.
On the other hand, the 20-year-old Danish ace Holger Rune is having a blast on the tour. Having consistent deep runs and a title in Munich, 2023 seems to be the stage where he announces himself. However, a lot of his behavior on the court has come under scrutiny in the last few weeks. The Danish player has made sure none of that affects him. He has continued to stay focused on his body to win a second ATP 1000 event.
Looking at their head-to-head clashes, one would say that Ruud is in for a feast. The Spaniard has given Rune a thrashing in each of their four clashes so far. Funnily enough, all their battles have taken place on the dirt. The pair had met twice at the Monte Carlo Masters, once at an event in Sweden, and once at the French Open.

Looking at their head to head one would clearly say that Ruud is the favorite to win this contest. However, he will be facing a different Holger Rune this time around. A more consistent and rejuvenated competitor. He will be coming into this game on the back of two tough three-setters and had to take an MTO in his previous match. His fitness will be a concern for sure.
Ruud has just lost one set and has had an easier path. Backing Rune to win this in three purely on the basis of fitness. However, if the young gun manages to stay fit throughout he may just give Ruud a run for his money.
Prediction: Casper Ruud will win the match in three sets.
