In a juicy quarter-final encounter at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia World No. 1, Iga Swiatek takes on 7th seed Elena Rybakina. The Polish star has come off two back-to-back finals on the dirt in which she won the Stuttgart Open and lost to Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Masters. On the other hand, the Kazakh, after a solid season on the Hard courts, has lost her way a bit on the clay.

Iga Swiatek has been almost unbeatable in the 2023 season. Her consistency is second to none. Her stroke play has precision and her court coverage has made it really difficult for her opponents. She won the Qatar Open after a surprising early exit at Melbourne. And since then she has regularly had deep runs at events. Her second tournament win of the year was at Stuttgart and then made the final in Madrid.

In a near perfect season, if there is one person who has stood in the way of the top seed, it’s Elena Rybakina. She has inflicted two defeats on the World No. 1 this year. She beat her 6-4, 6-4 at the Australian Open and 6-2, 6-2 at the Indian Wells. Swiatek, to an extent, can’t be blamed for the losses, as it was a task to cross the tall Kazakhastani on hard courts this year. She made it to the final of the Aussie Open and the two American Master’s 1000 hard court events. She won the Indian Wells event, losing only one set in her journey to glory.

Swiatek and Rybakina have met three times previously. Their first meeting was in 2021 at the Ostrava Open where Swiatek knocked Rybakina out of the quarters in a straight sets defeat 7-6, 6-2. The other two meetings came this year, in which the 7th seed prevailed on both occasions.

Looking at the recent form on the dirt, the early advantage will be with the top seed. Having lost just one match on the clay so far, she is certainly entering this contest with a lot of confidence. Rybakina, on the other hand, has had a sluggish season on the dirt. However, her 2-0 record over Swiatek this year will give her the much-needed confidence to win the contest and move to the semi-finals. Both players would want to have a deep run before they head to Paris for the big prize later this month. Expect a mouth-watering match with Swiatek taking it in the decider.

Prediction: Swiatek to win in 3 sets.
