Novak Djokovic vs Holger Rune: Preview
Novak Djokovic is all set to defend his title at the Rome Open. The 35-year-old is on a quest to achieve his record-extending 39th ATP Masters 1000 title. With his back-to-back disappointing performances in Monte-Carlo and Banja Luka, the Serb went on to withdraw from the Madrid Open. He is now back at Rome where he has reached the quater-finals in all his fourteenth appearances.
After winning the first round against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, he went on to defeat Grigor Dimitrov in the best of three-sets match (6-3, 4-6, 6-1). In the third round of Rome, Djokovic outperformed the British player, Cameron Norrie, in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). The match was nothing short of drama after the Serbian passed an ‘intense’ glare following the accidental hit from Norrie at the net. At his post match-interview, Djokovic stated his satisfaction to have achieved favorable results, inspite of unexpected delays due to rain.
On the other hand, Holger Rune has reached Rome, after winning the accolade at the Bavarian International Open. The 20-year-old is playing a ‘sensational’ tennis after as he attained back-to-back finals spot at both Monte-Carlo and Munich Open. His potential title claim was cut short in Madrid, after he lost the final to Andrey Rublev.
Under his short-term partnership with the star coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, the Dane has shone great developments in his overall playing style. Their collaboration provided Rune to win his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Paris and placed him in the Top10 rankings. The accolade made him the only highest ranked Danish player in the history. At the Rome Open, the World No.7 overcame the challenge of home favorite, Fabio Fognini and won the second round match in straight sets(6-4, 6-2).
In the third round, Rune won the first set, but Alexei Popyrin bounced back to secure the second set win. While going for the decider, the Danish player generated impressive tennis and booked his seat for the quarter-finals(6-4, 7-5, 6-4).
Looking at the Head2Head of Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune, they both have played each other just two times. Their first meeting took place at the US Open in 2021, where the then teenager Rune lost in the first round (6-1, 7-6, 6-2, 6-1). At the Paris Masters final last year, they both met for the second time, but the results were different. The Dane stunned the top seed to claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title after winning the match in 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Novak Djokovic vs Holger Rune: Prediction
Novak Djokovic definitely has an upper hand over Holger Rune in the upcoming quarter-finals. At the Rome Open, Djokovic is not just the defending champion but the ‘seven times’ title holder. Withholding the record of reaching the quarter-finals in all his appearances, the Serb will pose a huge hurdle for Rune. The Australian Open champion has the flare momentum and is in great form to win the tournament.
