This year, Veronica Kudermetova has been quite on the side of ‘underperformance’. The Russian had thus far reached only three semi-finals at the WTA Tour. Her only accolade of the season is the Dubai Championships trophy, in partnership with Liudmila Samsonova for the women’s doubles category. With the start of the clay season, the 26-year-old faced an early upset at the Stuttgart Open. In Madrid, Kudermetova played impressive tennis to reach the semi-finals after defeating Top 10 players like Jessica Pegula and Daria Kasatkina. However, her incredible run was cut short as she faced defeat at the hands of World No. 1, Iga Swiatek.

At the Rome Open, the World No. 12 crossed the hurdles of Nurria Parrizas-Diaz and Anastasia Potapova in the first and second rounds, respectively. In the third round, Kudermetova achieved an easy win over the Czech player, Marie Bouzkova (6-2, 6-2). In the quarterfinal match, Qinwen Zheng played aggressive tennis and won the first set. While keeping a positive mindset, the Russian player bounced back from a set down and achieved her victory (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) to reach her second straight WTA 1000 semi-final.

On the other hand, Anhelina Kalinina has only made it to the round of 16 in her previous tournaments. The World No. 48 had a ‘disappointing’ start to her clay campaign with a ‘no-show’ in the Stuttgart Open. After reaching Madrid, the Ukrainian player lost in the first round against Mayar Sherif. Before the Rome Open, Kalinina had failed to win consecutive matches since the Australian Open.

In the Italian Open, the 26-year-old won the first and second rounds against Anna Blinkova and Sofia Kenin, respectively, without dropping a set. She claimed her third-round victory after defeating the American player, Madison Keys (2-6, 6-2, 6-4). In the quarterfinals against Beatriz Haddad Maia, Kalinina won the terrific battle in 3 hours and 41 minutes. After playing a tie-breaker in two sets and being down 3-0 in the decider, the World No. 48 marked an incredible triumph in her career.

While taking a glance at their WTA Head-to-Head, Kudermetova and Kalinina have faced each other only two times. The first meeting at the Linz Open in 2021 resulted in the victory of the Russian player in three sets. However, at this year’s Dubai Championships, Kalinina defeated the World No. 12 in the round of 64. With a record of 1-1, their third encounter will definitely be an intense battle.

With their brewing rivalry since their junior days, both their previous encounters have resulted in three sets. Kalinina’s performance in the quarterfinals has established her strong game, and she is quite capable of winning another battle in Rome. On the other side, Kudermetova has reached her second consecutive semi-final on clay. With her better experience on the surface and ‘aggressive’ game style, the 26-year-old will definitely be aiming to book her first final spot of the season.

Prediction: Veronica Kudermetova will claim her victory in three sets.
