“It’ll be a real shame” Emma Raducanu told to sack Russian Dmitry Tursunov as her coach by British politicians

World No. 10 Emma Raducanu continues to find herself in unwarranted controversies and troubles. The majority of those have been due to her performances this season which have not been great after the promise she showed last season by reaching the 4th round at 2021 Wimbledon and then winning the 2021 US Open title, all when she was ranked outside the Top-100. This year, however, she is yet to reach a semi-final in any event.

After being without a permanent coach through two Grand Slam events, Emma finally signed up with Russian coach Dmitry Tursunov, the former coach of World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit who had an exponential rise last season that saw her finish as the runner-up at the 2021 WTA Finals after winning four titles in 3 months. With a brilliant portfolio of Kontaveit under Dmitry, Emma turned to the coach as she has a big US Open coming ahead where a poor performance could see her drop from World No. 10 to possibly outside the Top-100.

Dmitry’s appointment has turned a lot of heads as Emma is currently the British No. 1 player and her hiring of a Russian coach weeks after the 2022 Wimbledon concluded where the players from Russia and Belarus were banned due to the ongoing war in Ukraine does not look good for many. While netizens were quick to make a laughing stock of the matter as soon as the announcement was official, even British politicians have spoken about the matter.

“The Kremlin will portray this as a PR coup and an indication that the UK doesn’t really care about the war in Ukraine, so it’ll be a real shame if Emma goes ahead with this. I urge her to think again and at the very least to condemn Putin’s barbaric war,” said Chris Bryant, MP of the Labour Party and chair of the all Parliamentary group, speaking with the Telegraph.

Julian Knight, chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee, also presented his thoughts on the Raducanu situation and said, “It does jar to see a Russian coaching Britain’s number one rising star. You would hope that the LTA would show some leadership on this and be able to advise Emma what is the best course of action,” speaking with the Telegraph.
