“It’ll make players concentrate more on the game” Stefanos Tsitsipas retaliates to Taylor Fritz’s comments on off-court coaching

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz

Ahead of the 2022 US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas must be reeling with joy because of ATP’s new off-court coaching regulations. Tsitsipas has gone through much scrutiny over the years for his tendencies to get coaching from his father. The World No. 5 is happy with the new rule with the US Open just about to begin. A lot of players have expressed strong opinions about this change. ATP began the off-court coaching trial on July 11 and is planning to experiment with it till the ATP Finals in Turin.

Recently. American star Taylor Fritz opened up about his problem with the new coaching rule. He claimed it is ‘a dumb rule’ and said, “Tennis is an individual sport, so why should someone else be able to help you? I think people underestimate how mental and strategic the sport is, so they don’t understand how big of a difference it is.”

Trust me, off-court coaching is happening with almost every player : Stefanos Tsitsipas on ATP’s coaching regulations

The Greek tennis star won’t have to worry about constant warnings and violations now considering he hasn’t always been discreet while communicating with his team. Tsitsipas commented, “My coach has not been as discreet as other coaches, but it (off-court coaching) has always been happening. I’ve got a lot of coaching violations, which I found unfair. But now that it’s legalised I’m more than happy I won’t have to deal with referees that are so strict and want to kind of ruin the game.”

Tsitsipas also did not shy away from answering Taylor Fritz‘s concerns about coaching. He said, “Trust me, it (off-court coaching) is happening with almost every single player. The fact that it’s legalised now is going to make tennis a bit more peaceful, make players concentrate more on the game, less on different kinds of nonsense.”

It will be interesting to see this paradigm change at the US Open as people don’t know the extent to which players can consult with their team during the match. Stefanos Tsitsipas is set to play Colombian, Daniel Elahi Galan, in his first round match at the US Open championship.
