World No. 12 on the WTA Tour and the top-ranked Russian player, Daria Kasatkina has been making good progress in the past couple of seasons that has seen her break into the Top-15 and inching closer to re-entering the Top 10 as she was the World No. 10 for a brief period of time in October 2018.

Daria made her way to her first major semi-final at the 2022 French Open where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She had earlier matched her best result at the 2022 Australian Open by reaching the 3rd round for the first time since 2016. Having missed this year’s Wimbledon due to the ban on her and her compatriots for the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, the 25-year-old recently talked about the war that has been going on since 24th February 2022.

“I have no connection with the war”: Daria Kasatkina

Daria recently made an appearance on the Youtube channel of Vitya Kravchenko and indulged in a conversation on various topics. One of those was the ongoing attempt of the Russian forces to invade Ukraine, an attempt that has been going on for almost 5 months now and has torn the European nation completely with massive destruction and loss of human life.

“For the war to end. There hasn’t been a single day since February 24 (when Russia invaded Ukraine) that I haven’t read some news or haven’t thought of for the day to pass by. Really I have no connection with it (the war). I haven’t been affected, thank God, barely minimum, Wimbledon and all that.

“But people who have relatives in Ukraine, especially when you start talking about Russia. I can’t imagine what they are going through. It’s a full-blown nightmare. … Without a thought, I would do anything I can (to end it), but unfortunately (I can’t),” said Daria speaking with Vitya.

Daria’s comments are quite brave and bold given the strict rules in Russia where the opposers of wars have been punished by the government and actions have been taken against them for not supporting their own country. In circumstances like these, coming forward and directly speaking about the war has indeed been a strong move from Kasatkina.
