“It’s all about generational change” Rafael Nadal speaks about the future of tennis after the Big-3 showdown

Rafael Nadal is slowly getting back to practice after his withdrawal from the Wimbledon Championship 2022. He utilized his time getting rejuvenated and recharged for the hard-court season tournaments which start next month. He is making his comeback at the Canadian Open and is looking to have a good hard-court season. He will be aiming for his 5th US Open title, overall 23rd Grand Slam title.

Rafael Nadal surpassed his arch-rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the tally of most singles Grand Slam titles to his name. Bac-to-back triumphs at the 2022 Australian Open followed by Roland Garros made him in contention for a calendar Grand Slam but it got shattered at the Wimbledon 2022 due to his injury during the quarter-final match which ultimately led to his withdrawal in the semifinals against Nick Kyrgios.

“Mental strength is an important element of competition”: Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal, in an interview, recently spoke that he is confident about the new set of players will have a great future in tennis and will be able to leave behind a legacy after the likes of Roger, Novak, and himself whenever they decide to step down from the sport. He believed that changes are part and parcel of the game and as we have replaced stars, someone will surely replace us.

He said, “In tennis, there has always been a generational change. We have had great stars that have been replaced by others, it is normal. Perhaps in our case what has happened is that we have been many years, but I am convinced that those who arrive will stay and take over“.

He further spoke about mental strength being an asset and one of the biggest strengths for a sportsperson and it is the same for him. He stated that “Mental strength is one of the important elements for competition. Everything can be trained and that mental strength is something I also worked with my uncle Toni since I was a child. Then, with the evolution of my career that work continued and the competition itself made it intensify and continue to evolve“.
