World No. 10 Emma Raducanu continues to struggle for wins and momentum as her maiden title defence approaches fast. The Brit is about to defend 2000 points at the 2022 US Open later this month when the Grand Slam starts on 29th August in New York. Emma became a household name thanks to her title at the major last year and become a celebrity overnight. While her off-court life has changed for the better, the on-court results continue to drop.

The teen is yet to breach the quarter-final stage since winning the Grand Slam last year and has not won three consecutive matches even once this season. With the firing of coach Torben Beltz after 5 months and no permanent hiring since then, Raducanu has been under the public spotlight ever since. She recently brought on Dmitry Tursunov as her coach but the duration is not confirmed as the Russian coach was not with the Brit at the 2022 Canadian Open where Emma suffered a first-round defeat.

Emma Raducanu had been warned of hiring a Russian coach

While Emma continues to battle her on-court demons, she somehow finds herself in trouble off the court as well. With the UK being a strong opposer of the Russian regime for its actions during the war in Ukraine which has now been going on for almost 6 months, the Brit was advised by many leading politicians of the UK to not continue her partnership with Dmitry as he parted ways with World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit because of not getting visa easily due to his citizenship and the pairing of Emma with a Russian could raise a lot of questions.

The fears of the politicians have come out true as Shamil Tarpischev, Chief of the currently suspended Russian Tennis Federation has made a snarky remark over the current partnership of Raducanu and Tursunov and has claimed the credit of nurturing the coach who has been quite successful in the recent past.

“He is ours, he happens at our training camps, we do not leave him, we support him. The question of whom he trains is the personal opinion of the athlete. We once offered him to work, just like Chesnokov, but he chose a different path, it is more profitable to train one of the leading athletes today,” said Tarpischev as per TACC.

Having earlier claimed credit for Elena Rybakina‘s title at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as well, Tarpischev’s statements are not surprising. However, Raducanu would look to stay away from further being dragged into an unnecessary controversy such as the one Tarpischev is looking to create.
