“It’s not about being the best of the history,” Rafael Nadal explains role of rivalry with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in fulfilling his dreams
Rafael Nadal reigned supreme on the Parisian clay for a record 14th time, as the Spaniard saw off Casper Ruud in straight sets in the finals. The Norwegian hardly had any glimmer of hope, as Rafael Nadal controlled the proceedings since Game one. The 36-year-old was dealing with worsening foot issues throughout the clay court season, and he was not the certain favorite to claim his 14th title in Paris.
However, just like he did at the Australian Open 2022, the Spaniard battled against all odds to claim the French Open title. He even defeated his fierce rival, Novak Djokovic in four sets in the quarter-finals. Time and time again, Rafael Nadal has put away his need to be the best among the Big Three, involving Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
As things stand, the 14-time French Open winner leads the GOAT race with 22-Grand Slam titles, whereas, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have claimed 20 each. The Spaniard spoke about his determination to keep playing tennis, and the fact that each of the Big Three members have achieved their dreams.
Rafael Nadal ‘reveals’ motivation to keep playing tennis
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Rafael Nadal revealed that he has no intention of becoming the best in the history of the sport. The Spaniard mentioned that his rivals, and himself have achieved every single bit of success, they ever dream about.
“It’s very simple to understand for me. It’s not about being the best in history, it’s about that I like what I do the competition. Me, Roger and Novak already made things we didn’t expected,” said Nadal in the post match conference.
Rafael Nadal reiterated the importance of playing in front of fans, something which fuels his passion even more. The Spaniard has enjoyed great rivalries with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, and there is no doubt that it has made him a better and a mature player.
“The competition to be the best is not my motivation. It is to live moments, to play in front of the crowds. And the passion for the sport,” Nadal added.
Rafael Nadal also dropped an interesting update in regards to his participation at Wimbledon. The reigning French Open champion revealed that he would certainly not miss the Championship, if his body allows him to do so.
