World No 3 last year’s semi-finalist Alexander Zverev is back in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open after winning an intense battle in the fourth round. Up against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Sascha won the match 7-6(11), 7-5, 6-3 in 2 hours and 45 minutes to keep his bid for winning his first Grand Slam title on track.

Zverev was deemed to sweep the floor with Miralles and while he did win in straight-sets, he was tested brilliantly by the Spaniard who at moments looked to turn the tide of the match towards him. Zverev like many others was impressed and despite admiring the opponent, he also addressed the shortcomings in his own group.

“He was very impressive and I think if he can continue playing like this, he’s gonna go up in the rankings as well. I think obviously there were some holes in my game, concentration wise, but I think in general it was a good match. Not holes in my game I think, holes in my concentration. For one, in the first set, I had a little bit of downfall that kind of let him into the match little but these things happen but I am happy that I am through in three sets.

“It’s 12 degrees outside it is very difficult to get the ball past 200kms/hr which usually I don’t have problems with. To give him credit, he was returning very well, he was returning pretty much every return. One meter in front of the baseline, it is difficult to do something from that but I thin heat helps my serve which there wasn’t any of today,” said Zverev during the press-conference.

Alexander Zverev discusses the challenges of the night session

With the night sessions in Paris being a highly controversial subject this year with regard to the scheduling and the challenges of the surface. Zverev also gave his opinion ahead of his quarter-final clash with Carlos Alcaraz while also firing shots at the tournament officials of giving preferential treatment to the teenager over other players.

“I don’t mind the evening sessions when it is 30 degrees in the day. When it is 14 degrees like today then in the night it is going to be 8 or 9 something like that, it gets difficult. But that’s just for me, my game to be honest. Because my serve is going to be even slower, my forehand is going to be even slower so it’s not going to be an easy thing for me to play at 9:30 in the night with no sunlight no heat and 8 degrees.

“But I’m pretty sure that I’m going to play Alcaraz in the night because that’s how it will be so getting ready for that. Of course, he’s the new face of Tennis but it should be more mixed. It’s obvious in which direction things are going and who the tournament wants to see go through,” added Sascha.
