American teen sensation Coco Gauff had a stellar season where she made it to her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros and finished 4th in the race to Fort Worth. She became the youngest person to qualify for the WTA Finals since Serena Williams but to her dismay, she had an absolutely shocking week.
She lost all her group stage matches and didn’t even manage to win any set. She played very poor tennis filled with errors and just couldn’t land her shots within range. She even got bageled by Iga Swiatek once again and during the course of the week, couldn’t control her tears due to her poor display.
Gauff spoke about how hard she worked to qualify for the WTA Finals and expressed her disappointment with the result. She was more frustrated with the manner in which she lost and went on to say that she didn’t improve at all.
“I know, it wasn’t my whole season,” Gauff said. “But I feel like I worked so hard to get here and I didn’t take the opportunity as I wanted to. It’s not even about the losses, just some of the ways that I lost. I feel like I didn’t improve this week. I feel like I stayed stagnant. Usually in my career, even if I lose the first round at a tournament, there’s always some sort of improvement.”
Coco Gauff claims the WTA Finals was the worst week of the season for her
She said that this week in Fort Worth was the worst all year and claimed that she never lost so much so fast. She added that this will serve as a teaching curve for her and because losing sucks, she is even more motivated to do better.
“It’s probably the worst week of the year for me. I’ve never lost so much so fast. “It gives me a lot of motivation to do better, because losing sucks. I’m gonna remember this feeling and use it to feel when I practice and use it to feel when I hopefully play this again.”
