“It’s sad that they don’t want to mention my name!” Margaret Court opens up on the discriminatory reception received at Wimbledon

Margaret Court

Margaret Court, the retired tennis legend from Australia is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and has the most number of singles Grand Slam titles. Court has won 19 Grand Slam women’s doubles and 21 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Court’s all-surfaces singles career-winning percentage is the best of all time.

She has won 24 singles major titles that nobody has surpassed in the history of tennis followed by Serena Williams‘ 23 singles titles. Since Serena retired from the competitive world after her third-round defeat at the 2022 US Open, her record is still intact with only Rafael Nadal inching closer to it as he stands at 22 titles. The 11-time Australian Open champion is also one of only six tennis players ever to win a Multiple Grand Slam set in two disciplines. She is currently a Christian Minister in Perth.

“Nobody even spoke to me!” Margaret Court on the feeling of being left out at the Wimbledon

Margaret Court

Margaret Court during an interview opened up on the bad reception she had received at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship which made her feel left out of place even after winning 24 titles. She felt that she wasn’t admired enough for her achievements and should have been shown some amount of respect that she deserves.

She said “I was at Wimbledon this year and nobody even spoke to me. So I thought, ‘Ah, that’s interesting. It’s very sad, because a lot of the press and television today, particularly in tennis, don’t want to mention my name. It’s only when they have to because I still hold so many records. In 2020, I was meant to be coming to Wimbledon for the 50th anniversary of my Calendar Grand Slam. But then Covid hit, so the honour never happened.

Court strongly has always been very upfront with her views that often land her on the receiving end for her hurtful and ruthless opinions. She further added “The French Open didn’t invite me, the US Open didn’t invite me. Rod Laver had won the slam and I was going to be honoured in the same way, but no. I didn’t lose any sleep over it. But the honour has not been there for what I did do. In my own nation, I have been given titles, but they would still rather not mention me.
