It is no secret that the likes of Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner are considered the new ‘Big Three of Tennis.’ The trio have announced themselves on the big stage over the past year, and have given fans some memorable matches. Carlos Alcaraz is undoubtedly the best player on the tour at the moment, having won his first Major title at the US Open last year.

Holger Rune claimed his first Master’s title in Paris last year after he defeated Novak Djokovic in the finals. The Danish prodigy has carried his form into the 2023 season and is one of the top contenders for the 2023 French Open. Jannik Sinner has been around for a couple of years, as he remains only of the few players who can give Carlos Alcaraz a run for his money in the current scenario.

Former coach of Roger Federer, Ivan Ljubicic opined on the budding rivalry among the new generation of players. He believes that big titles will eventually fall in Jannik Sinner’s way, but he has to be patient with the process. “It is difficult to make predictions. You are creating your path. Compared to Alcaraz, it is different, a bit longer. There is no point in rushing. Rune and Alcaraz let defeats slip more easily, Sinner really wants to get an important result, but he has to be patient because he is very young and very strong,” said Ivan.

Ivan Ljubicic heaps praise on ‘mature’ Carlos Alcaraz

Ivan Ljubicic believes that Carlos Alcaraz is calmer, mature as compared to his counterparts. This probably explains his recent success, especially on clay courts. The Spaniard claimed the Madrid and Barcelona Open titles, extending his unbeaten run in his home country to 21 matches.

“Holger believes a lot in himself, it’s important to have that drive to always want more. Alcaraz is calmer, more mature, more aware, and knows how to handle situations better on the track. I don’t see a big difference between the two players, there are fewer and fewer,” said Ivan.

Carlos Alcaraz remains the certain favorite to claim the 2023 French Open title, despite his early exit from the Italian Open. Holger Rune has been in some form himself during the clay court season, reaching the finals in Monte Carlo and Rome. He also defended his title in Munich last month. On the other hand, Jannik Sinner has had a topsy-turvy clay court season so far, as he managed to reach the semifinals in Monte Carlo. However, his performances in Barcelona and Rome have been underwhelming, to say the least.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been a part of some epic encounters in the past year or so. The duo have locked horns against each other on five occasions in the last 12 months, with Jannik Sinner coming out on top on three occasions. Their latest series of matches came during the Sunshine Double when they competed in the semifinals of the Miami and Indian Wells Open.
