“I’ve already broken the record,” Serena Williams takes a fresh new dig at Margaret Court’s Grand Slam tally

Margaret Court and Serena Williams

Former World No. 1 Serena Wiliams is about to enter the final tournament of her career at the 2022 US Open as the American has announced she will be retiring at the end of her home Slam. Serena entered the main draw in singles through protected ranking as she was out injured since the last year’s Wimbledon Championships and returned to action only at this year’s Wimbledon.

Apart from the singles, she will be also playing in the Doubles event along with sister Venus Williams as the two combine for the first time since the 2018 French Open. Venus and Serena accepted a late wildcard for what can be the final time fans could see the two play together as Serena is ‘almost’ confirmed to retire while Venus has made no such announcement.

“It’s all a bonus,”: Serena Williams on the Grand Slam titles

Speaking recently at the Today Show, Serena was once again asked about the Margaret Court record of winning 24 Grand Slam titles which the Australian great won combined in the Amateur Era (13) and the Open Era (11). As for Serena, she has been left stranded on 23 Grand Slam titles, all won in the Open Era (obviously). After winning her 23rd major in the 2017 Australian Open, Serena reached 4 more Grand Slam finals, twice in Wimbledon and twice in the US Open but ended up as the runner-up on all 4 occasions.

“I’ve already broken the record. So I think it’s just someone else’s vision and mine is just to … I never dreamed of having this many grand slams or titles. I just thought I would just play tennis and maybe win a grand slam or two. So for me, it’s all a bonus,” said Serena making a snarky remark on the Grand Slam count given she won all in the Open Era and no other player, male or female, has been able to match her own record.

While the debate around this topic will continue for decades, there are quite a lot of aspects to consider. Surely, Serena would have had a bigger challenge in terms of opponents, the equipment used by the generation of Court was a big challenge itself as compared to the modern-day balls and rackets. But in any case, Serena is convinced that her titles coming in the Open Era surely make her the title holder.
