World No. 3 Rafael Nadal is currently the leader on the ATP Tour with 22 Grand Slam titles to his name. He is closely tailed by arch-rival Novak Djokovic with 21 majors and Roger Federer on 20 majors. Nadal started the year with 20 majors but with the wins in Australia and Paris, he is now in the front seat and could have made it three majors for the season at Wimbledon had it not been for the abdominal tear that forced him out ahead of his semi-final clash. The Spaniard is 19-0 in Grand Slam events this season.

Nadal’s season has been a rollercoaster so far and yet the 36-year-old has managed to pull through and tried his best to be participating in the events. Having returned to action at the start of the year from a 4-month injury layoff, Nadal’s career-best start to the season was halted by a stress fracture in his rib that forced him to have a delayed start on Clay. His return was not the best as he picked up a foot injury prior to the 2022 French Open and played with injections throughout the Grand Slam in his victory run to his 14th title in Paris.

Nadal’s courage on the court is one of his most brilliant attributes and former World No. 1 and 7-time singles Grand Slam champion John McEnroe couldn’t stress it enough during his recent interview where he compared the Spaniard to former World No. 1 and 8-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors who continues to hold the record for most ATP titles won with 109 titles to his name.

“I’ve never seen anyone like him. I thought Jimmy Connors tried hard until I saw Rafael Nadal, this is insane. And that’s the greatest quality he has, by far. I mean, the guy’s an unbelievable player, we all know that. But the fact that he can go out there and give that type of effort, you know, match in and match out, game in and game out, is something that people aspire to, but it’s very difficult to do.

“Otherwise, everyone would do it. I mean, you just say, well go to Nick Kyrgios and say ‘go out and give an effort, you’ll be No. 2, No. 3 in the world. Well, if it was that easy, I guess he would do it. But you know, for him, it isn’t,” said McEnroe speaking with Tennis 365.
