“I’ve won a Grand Slam at 19” Emma Raducanu gives a stern reply to the no-head coach criticism
Emma Raducanu
World No. 11 Emma Raducanu‘s woes with injuries continue as the Brit was forced to forfeit her first-round match at the 2022 Nottingham Open against Victorija Golubic. Emma was 4-3 down when she found herself unable to continue further and handed her third walkover in less than four months.
Crippled with injuries along with her decision to have no head coach, Emma has come under the scrutiny of many who have called out the Brit to make an appointment soon for the vacant head coach position. The Brit had let go of Torben Beltz in late April, a month prior to the 2022 French Open, and has since been then looking for his replacement. She has been helped by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) with Iain Bates, head of women’s tennis at the LTA, working as her temporary coach but the partnership hasn’t been fruitful.
Torben’s last match as Emma’s coach was the quarter-final clash between Raducanu and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Stuttgart Open in which Iga won in straight-sets. Post Torben’s dismissal, Emma has reached the third round only once in her four tournament appearances since then.
“I want to take my time with this decision. Nothing has changed. I still have the same people, good people, around me. I don’t want to rush into anything. Personally, I think I know what I’m doing. I’m trusting what I’m doing and the work I’m doing. I’m still 19 and I’ve already won a Grand Slam so I can take my time and put things in place because I know my motivation isn’t any less,” said Emma, to her critics of the coaching situation, in comments reported by Eurosport.
Emma Raducanu has won only 8 eight matches this season
Due to her inconsistent performances and struggles with injuries, Emma has managed only 8 wins from the 19 matches she has played. She is yet to win three consecutive matches on the trot this season and has won back-to-back matches only twice this season. She is 2-5 on hardcourts, 6-5 on claycourts and has started the grass season with a defeat contributing to her 0-1 start on the surface.
