Czech tennis player Jakub Mensik is currently on the rise. After a phenomenal performance at the Qatar Open, the 18-year-old is in the spotlight in the tennis world. 

However, he gave a walkover against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the 2024 Dubai Open, and it came as a surprise to many. Some fans were also concerned about whether it was an injury issue that might set him back for a month or so.

Shutting down these rumors, the youngster took to Instagram to give the fans an update about his situation. He revealed that after the first-round match, he was sore and that his right elbow was getting worse with every serve.

Thus, he decided to withdraw from the tournament to focus on his health because his next immediate target would be to take part in the Indian Wells. 

Hi guys, Im very sad that I had to retire today... After last 2 weeks and yesterday's match I was totaly sore, exhausted and my right elbow during the serve motion was getting worse and worse last few days... I have to think about my health and future, that's why I chose this difficult decision. I will try my best to recover as fast as possible for next event. Thank you to all of you for your support and love. See you soon.

Jakub Mensik played against Borna Coric in the first round of the tournament. He lost the first set but made a great comeback from there and won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-6(7) after a thrilling tie-break in the third set. In his match against Fokina, he was already one set down when he decided to give a walkover.

Talking about Mensik’s performance in the 2024 Qatar Open, it was one to remember for ages. He defeated the same Davidovich Fokina in the first round in straight sets with ease.

He then went on to defeat Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev, and Gael Monfils in the next three rounds back to back which led to some fans even calling him the ‘legend-killer’ of the Qatar Open. His straight-set victory against Andrey Rublev was particularly impressive. 

Unfortunately, the youngster could not keep up the momentum in the final against Karen Khachanov. The two players had a sensational tiebreak in the first set, which Russian won 14-12.

Mensik perhaps lost his morale there because he gave up the second set pretty easily. It was a devastating loss for him, especially after the way he played throughout the tournament. However, he will now shift his focus to recovering ahead of the Indian Wells
